K-1 multiage project-based classroom teacher
Ross Valley Charter School - Fairfax
This incredible, progressive, joyful, and diverse public school has a rare opening for two K/1 teachers. The multi-age classrooms work together often, regularly combining to differentiate math and reading instruction or build on grand investigations! The students alight with purpose focused on “expos” (expositions) or units of study, thematic approaches to learning; for example, the first K/1 expo this year was toys/games. Students used the theme to consider the value of fairness and rules (and made classroom norms), explored the history of old toys and games and interviewed a grandparent or special friend about beloved childhood games, constructed pinwheels, tops, and dice (science and math connection), and designed their own Candy-Land-inspired games to play with visitors on the day of their expo. The thematic, multidisciplinary approach dovetails with daily math and literacy instruction, daily PE, weekly art, and weekly music. Students direct their learning and feel proud of their community and growth. RVC is doing something special not seen in many public schools right now, with racial and socio-economic diversity that is hard to find in private schools. BATTI grads, with their social justice and progressive education philosphies, are likely to find a great fit at RVC.
