Welcome
The Bay Area Teacher Training Institute (BATTI)
offers a friendly and professional, multiple subject
credential program, with small seminars taught by excellent
master teachers. Close
supervision from thoughtful, experienced mentors and
supervisors creates an atmosphere of reflection,
collegiality, and support.
BATTI is a two-year credential program under the
sponsorship of San Francisco State
University. All BATTI
students work as paid intern teachers at one of a
coalition of more than 20 independent (private or
parochial) elementary schools around the Bay Area.
BATTI students work as assistants (interns) during the
day and take university classes two afternoons a week
and one Saturday morning per month. While holding paid
internships, they gain valuable experience and credit
toward their teaching credential.
BATTI's Academic program
The BATTI experience combines exciting on-the-job training
with dynamic and inspiring university classes coordinated
by SF State. Students gain a multiple subject credential
that will qualify them to teach in any California public or
private elementary or middle school. The BATTI program includes two
academic years and the summer in between. In all five
semesters BATTI students take two academic classes and
a seminar with their cohort of 20-25 fellow students.
Job Placement
Once BATTI candidates are accepted to the program in March
and April, the BATTI Directorhelps them get hired at one of
the excellent independent schools that make up our
coalition. Candidates must also actively pursue assistant
teacher/intern jobs at the schools, apply, visit on their
own, interview, and finally secure a job. Without an intern
job at one of our coalition schools, a candidate cannot
participate in the BATTI program.
The Coalition
Schools
Our coalition schools include Katherine Delmar Burke,
Carey, Cathedral, Chinese-American, Hamlin, Live Oak, Marin
Country Day, Nueva, The San Francisco School, SF Day, SF
Friends, and the Town School. In the East Bay the coalition
schools include Aurora, Bentley, Berkwood-Hedge, Black Pine
Circle, Head-Royce, Park Day, Prospect Sierra, Redwood Day,
and St. Paul’s Episcopal School. Guidance from experienced
mentor teachers at the area’s finest schools gives BATTI
students a powerful start to their teaching careers.
Public School experience
BATTI interns spend one morning each week in a local public
school, gaining valuable experience as volunteers. During
the summer after the first two semesters, students observe
and teach in a public school setting while continuing with
their education classes.
Courses Leading to a Masters Degree
Nine of the 38 semester units students earn are
transferable to a masters program.
Why is BATTI a Good Choice?
BATTI students get to work full-time and gain from all
their classroom experience. Our program provides excellent
supervision to credential students in addition to the
guidance the interns receive from their mentor teachers.
The small cohort group is inspiring and fun.
Required Introductory Open
Houses
You must attend one of our introductory open houses in
order to learn about the program in full, receive
application materials, and have a chance to have all your
questions answered. At the meeting you will also receive a
contact list and suggestions that will help you apply to
the coalition schools. If you are applying from out of the
area, please contact the director by email, and other
arrangements will be made for your orientation.
We Want You to Join Us
BATTI seeks to diversify the teaching ranks by attracting
more males and teachers of color into the profession. BATTI
is an exciting choice for a credential program, and is
dedicated to attracting good teachers to the profession and
helping them thrive.
